Delon Hampton & Associates (DHA), as the program and construction manager subconsultant, provided pre-construction, design phase, procurement phase, program management assistance, inspection, cost estimating, and construction management services for this highly complex facility. The 676,844 SF, six-acre Visitor Center features two 280-seat theaters, exhibits, gift shops, an auditorium, a virtual museum, food service and visitor comfort area. It also includes a service tunnel, mechanical facilities, and storage.
Minimizing the impact to the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood, DHA coordinated with DC Water to relocate a 30-inch forced main from the site’s footprint; redirected several electrical, telecom and data lines; and coordinated with DC DPW for planned traffic route and signalization changes. DHA also coordinated with WMATA to rearrange bus traffic to accommodate the increased site traffic brought on by the construction activities. Given its size, scope and location, the Visitor Center is one of the most exciting projects in the firm's portfolio.
